We need leaders who empower others to take positive action now

What was the most valuable thing you got out of CSL?

I got clarity about where I want to head with my career in the sustainability space.

Why are you passionate about sustainability? What was the moment or event that made you decide to become a 'change maker' in your field?

Whilst on a student exchange in the United States of America in 2008, I travelled to the state of West Virginia where I witnessed first-hand the devastating impacts of mountaintop removal mining on the local environment and communities. This experience left me feeling overwhelmed and depressed at the state of the world. As a way of dealing with these feelings, I spent many hours in nature watching birds. This connection to the natural world was a life-changing moment for me and the spark that ignited my desire to begin my change making journey in sustainability. I believe that only by re-connecting people with nature (including ourselves) will we bring about the transformational change required to have a thriving planet.

Why is leadership for sustainability is important?

We need leaders who empower others to take positive action now, enabling us to have a planet which is not only surviving, but thriving.

What do you plan to do next on your sustainability journey?

I intend on running for local government in the 2016 elections. CSL has given me the confidence to stand up and create positive and meaningful change. Through my work with OzGREEN, I also look forward to empowering more young people to take action on environmental and social sustainability issues in their local communities. I intend on continuing to have deeper conversations about sustainability through the Inside-Out Project. Next year, I plan on finishing my postgraduate studies in sustainability at Swinburne University of Technology.
